Prayer is the foundation of Unity and our ministry, and we believe in the power of prayer to expand and transform our minds and cultivate our relationship with God. We believe prayer aligns us with God and allows us to be inwardly guided to all that is good. Unity Baton Rouge Center provides prayer support and comfort through a number of forums, most importantly through our Prayer Chaplains. All prayer requests and support are considered sacred and are held in the strictest confidence. LEARN MORE ABOUT PRAYER CHAPLAINS.

Affirmative Prayer

When most people think of prayer, they think of asking God for something. Not so in Unity.

Unity uses “affirmative prayer.” Rather than begging or beseeching God, this method involves connecting with the spirit of God within and asserting positive beliefs about the desired outcome. Affirmative prayer is the same method of prayer Jesus taught when he said, “So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24).

If, for example, one were to pray traditionally, one might say: “Please God, help me find a job.” By contrast, an affirmative prayer might be: “I am now guided to my right and perfect employment.”

Affirmative prayer reflects the certainty that we are each being led to our highest good, despite any temporary appearances.

Metaphysicians believe that thoughts transmit magnetic energy and this energy attracts other energy of the same frequency. Whether you are conscious of it or not, your thoughts are transmitting energy that is attracting more of the same. When you remain focused on your intentions, you will draw those things into your life.

We are blessed to have the constant support of Prayer Chaplains. They are available each Sunday to pray with us one-on-one, and to hold the sacred space as we go through this journey called life.

Our Prayer Chaplains are volunteers who receive extensive training in affirmative prayer and holding a sacred space. All prayers are kept in strict confidence. This is the essence of what it means to be a prayer chaplain. Through their training, prayer chaplains:

  • Deepen their own spirituality and connection with God

  • Hold sacred space and listen from the heart

  • Experience personal and spiritual transformation

  • Learn how to stand in prayerful support of our spiritual family

  • Maintain a daily prayer practice that includes holding sacred space for the prayers submitted by congregants

Prayer is a foundational aspect of our faith tradition and was demonstrated by our co-founder Myrtle Fillmore in how she healed her body and spirit.

In the late 1880s, Unity’s co-founder Myrtle Fillmore’s life was transformed when she heard and believed the idea, “I am a child of God, and therefore I do not inherit sickness.” She had been very ill for many years, with something akin to tuberculosis. Speaking life-affirming words to the illness in her body, she went on to live a life of health and wholeness.

News of Myrtle’s prayer experience spread, and people near and far began sending their prayer requests to her. In 1890 Myrtle and her husband Charles began a prayer ministry. Daily they held in mind and heart the prayer requests of everyone who contacted them. That was more than 126 years ago – the beginning of Silent Unity.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, said that prayer is communion with God. Use the following Five-Step Prayer Process to deepen your communion with God, to heighten your awareness of the activity of God manifesting as you. Experience the power of prayer.

1.Relax Set aside time each day for prayer. Begin your quiet time by relaxing your body and opening your mind to an awareness of God. Breathe deeply, knowing that you are in the presence of God and the presence of God is within you. Let go of your concerns and know that all is well.

2. Concentrate As you close your eyes and release any thought of the world around you, begin to think about God … about God’s presence in your life. Focus your mind on a single thought or idea or scripture that resonates with you. Repeat this idea over and over, either silently or aloud until it becomes your only thought.

3.
Meditate Allow this focused state of mind to move you into a deeper awareness of God. “Be still … and know that I am God.” Be still as you connect with this divine presence within you.

4.Realize From the depth of your being, know that you are one with God. This knowing, this realization as you experience God’s holy presence is “silent soul communion.” In this receptive state of mind and heart, listen for the inspiration of God, the answers to your prayers.

5.Gratitude Let gratitude be your heart’s joyous response to this experience of communion with God and with God’s infinite goodness. Give thanks for blessings to come, ready to receive your good.
